a domain registrar that has no actual web site to point
at. It is registered solely to reserve the domain name and
prevent others from claiming it.
- What is a domain pointer?
A domain pointer is a domain that resolves to an IP address
that another domain is already pointing at. For example,
if you own the domain mywebsite1.com and you register a
new domain by the name of mywebsite2.com, and you want both
mywebsite1.com and mywebsite2.com to point to the same web
site, mywebsite2.com would be considered a domain pointer.
- How much does a pointer domain cost?
For new domain names, all that you are responsible for is
the domain registration fee. We will point your new domain
to any of your existing domains or subdomains free of charge.
WebGeo Hosting reserves the right to charge a setup fee
(usually $1.50 per domain) for excessive domain pointers
and to limit the number of pointer domains that will be
added or changed for each account. WebGeo Hosting reserves
the right to the final decision on what constitutes excessive
domain pointing.
- How long does it take to have the
pointer set up?
We will fulfill the request for the pointer within 24 hours
of your request. It usually takes between 2 to 48 hours
or more from the time that it is set up for the new domain
to propagate throughout the Internet.
- If WGH is registering my new domain,
who takes ownership?
All domain names are registered in YOUR name, not ours.

| General Questions
|
- What are FrontPage server extensions?
FrontPage extensions are CGI programs that provide the server
side implementation of FrontPage. FrontPage communicates
with the extensions via HTTP using a Remote Procedure Call
(RPC). When the server sees the "POST" request addressed
to the FrontPage server extensions it simply directs the
request to the appropriate CGI program. The extensions implement
authoring (uploading/downloading documents, ToDo lists),
administration (setting end-user, author, and administrator
privileges), and dynamic content (browse-time WebBot components).
Without the FrontPage server extensions you will not be
able to take advantage of the WebBots that are available
through FrontPage. You also cannot author and administer
your site using the tools provided as part of the FrontPage
Editor/Explorer package.
- What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the term used to measure the amount of data
being transferred from your web space.
When you access a web site, you are downloading a file.
This file can be a web page, a GIF or JPG image, a MIDI
sound file, a CGI script, or a combination of these. These
files are downloaded to your computer and displayed in your
web browser.
Each time you download a file, data is being transferred.
The amount of data depends on the size of the file. If you
download a web page that is 1 kilobyte (1,024 bytes), or
1KB, in size, then 1KB of data has been transferred. If
500 people access that same web page, then 500KB of data
has been transferred.
1,024KB is equal to 1MB. 1,024MB is equal to 1GB.
How much bandwidth a site will use depends on many factors.
You have to consider what kinds of files people will be
downloading. Certainly a site with mp3 files for visitors
to download will use more bandwidth than a small web site
with very few graphics. Statistically, most sites use less
than 500MB per month, which is half of 1GB.
- What is virtual hosting?
Virtual hosting is where multiple web sites are served off
the same physical server. This saves each customer from
purchasing their own expensive server, performing the setup
and providing the appropriate environment. This is the most
common method of hosting sites of small to medium size with
light to moderate traffic.
- What is SSL/What is shared SSL?
What is SSL?
Secure Sockets Layer, SSL, is the standard security technology
for creating an encrypted link between a web server and
a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between
the web server and browser remain private and integral.
It can be used to create secure links to protect transactions,
passwords, personal details, etc.
What is shared SSL?
A shared SSL certificate is one certificate that can be
used for all domains on the server.

| Web
Hosting FAQ |
- I recently signed up for a hosting
account and I am not able reach my site using the domain
name. What could be the possible cause?
If you have followed the steps for pointing your domain
name to our nameservers, but your new site does not appear
to be hosted, you are probably encountering a propagation
lag. The Internet is set up with thousands upon thousands
of name servers. Most are configured to receive updates
only at a certain time each day. It can take from 2 to 48
hours or more for your domain name to propagate across all
of the possible domain name servers. You can test this yourself
by typing in your temporary site URL and trying to bring
up your web site. If you can bring your web site up by the
IP address but not by domain name, it is probably a propagation
issue. Please give it a few days to resolve.
- What are the nameservers for WebGeo
Hosting?
Primary Server Hostname:
dns1.webgeodesigns.com
216.180.247.206
Secondary Server Hostname:
dns2.webgeodesigns.com
216.180.247.197
- What is the path to....?
Web Directory: /home/username/public_html
CGI-BIN: /home/username/public_html/cgi-bin
Sendmail: /usr/sbin/sendmail
Perl: /usr/bin/perl
Date: /bin/date
Whois: /usr/bin/whois
- What scripts, if any, are banned from
your servers?
- UltimateBBS (all versions)
- Ikonboard (all versions)
- All flat-file based forums
- All chat scripts
- All IRC related scripts
- IRC Egg Drops
- Proxy Servers
- nph-proxy
- The Anonymizer
- any soap mailers
- FormMail (versions prior to 1.9s)
If you are unsure about a script, just ask. :)
- What permissions will I need to set
my CGI scripts to in order to have them run properly?
CGI scripts only need to be chmod 755 to run. Additionally,
scripts should NOT be put at 777 on any server. This is
a huge security risk and opens your account up to all sorts
of possible abuse. If you have any scripts chmoded to 777,
then please change them to 755 immediately.
- I cannot access my subdomain at www.sub.domain.com?
Simply remove the "www." and you should be able to access
the subdomain fine. Subdomains cannot contain the "www."
prefix.
- What username/password do I use to
upload to my subdomains?
You will use your CPanel username/password. If you have
created the subdomain for another user, you may also create
an FTP account with the same name as the subdomain and then
that FTP username/password will work for the subdomain.
i.e. Create a subdomain named "webgeo". Then create an FTP
account with the username "webgeo". This FTP account will
now have permissions to upload to webgeo.yourdomain.com.
- How do I use shared SSL for my account?
To use our shared SSL certificate for your web site, please
use the following URL:
https://secure.webgeodesigns.com/~username/
Note the 's' in 'https://'. That is crucial and must be
there for SSL to function properly.
Also note that 'www.' is not present in the URL. The 'www.'
prefix must be omitted for SSL to function properly.
If you would like to, you may purchase your own SSL certificate
as an alternative to shared SSL. We will purchase a GeoTrust
SSL certificate on your behalf for a fee of $119.00 per
year, including installation. Installation of an SSL certificate
purchased elsewhere is $25.00. Please contact the support
team if you wish to purchase or install an SSL certificate.
If you are using shared SSL and any error boxes about insecure
items pop up, you either have images located outside of
your web site (all paths must be relative), or you may need
to use the following approach:
If your images are in a folder named images, your path in
your source code is probably something like: SRC=/images/blah.jpg
This may need to be changed to: SRC=/~username/images/blah.jpg
in order to have shared SSL work properly for your site.
If you have any problems using shared SSL, please contact
the support team.

- How do I add additional domains to
my account?
We are working on a script that will allow you to add domains
in real time via your CPanel. Expect a release date within
the next few months. In the meantime you must submit a support
request for additional domains to be added onto your account.
As stated throughout our site, you may host as many full
featured domains (each having it's own CPanel and unique
features) as you'd like within your space and bandwidth
limits. We do however impose a $1.99 setup fee per every
domain beyond the ninth (9th) additional domain. Meaning
we will allow up to nine (9) additional domains to be added
to your account free of charge. Each additional domain added
to your account thereafter will require a $1.99 setup fee
payable at time of setup. There are no monthly fees for
additional domains.
You may add additional domains to your account at anytime.
If you would like to host multiple domains on your account,
please make a list of the domains and include how you would
like to divide the space/bandwidth between them (including
the main domain that you signed up with), as well as a unique
username/password for each domain, and submit the list via
our support desk.
Example:
1.) domain1.com - 25MB Space/500MB Bandwidth (This is main
domain)
2.) domain2.com - 15MB Space/250MB Bandwidth - requested
username/password
3.) domain3.net - 10MB Space/274MB Bandwidth - requested
username/password
Hint: 1GB is equal to 1,024MB.
You will also need to update the DNS of the additional domains
to:
Primary Server Hostname:
dns1.webgeodesigns.com
216.180.247.206
Secondary Server Hostname:
dns2.webgeodesigns.com
216.180.247.197
